98% students fail to prepare impressive CV: expert

Speakers emphasise need to provide skilled training to students

MULTAN: At least 98% students fail to make a precise and impressive curriculum vitae (CV) while applying for jobs. Even after the completion of academic career, the students fail to formulate a resume which is the first mandatory step when applying for any job at national or international level.

This was said by National College of Business Administration and Economics (NCBA&E) Director Asad Ali while addressing the participants of a workshop on CV making. The event was organised at Government Post Graduate College Civil Lines, Multan on Tuesday.

The workshop was organised with the collaboration of Punjab Higher Education Commission and Government Post Graduate College Civil Lines under the aegis of Community College Programme.



Around 300 students from BS Mass Communication, BS Commerce and BS Information Technology attended the workshop to learn the expertise of CV making.

NCBA&E Director Asad Ali said that even the most skilled and knowledgeable people fail to get deserving jobs only because they do not know how to compose a CV. “The reason for no hiring in 60% of the jobs is wrong CV,” he added.

He maintained, “Almost 50% CVs are rejected at the first place because they contain unnecessary and redundant information.” He said that a special course on CV making should be included at the graduation level so that students would be able to jot down their qualities and expertise in a better and precise way.

“Most of the CVs that we receive on a daily basis are of three to four pages and contain unnecessary information such as weight, height, and colour of eyes. Such kind of information is required only for a handful of jobs,” he elaborated.

He pointed out, “Only one page CV with all necessary information written in a concise way is enough.”

In the international world, special courses on CV making were being offered to the students before the end of the academic career. “There is a dire need to introduce such trends in Pakistan as well where 60% population is young and searching for jobs,” Asad said. He said that the students should be taught about different computer applications used in CV making.

On the occasion, Government Post Graduate College Civil Lines Principal Baqar Jafri said that community college initiative was a two year associate degree programme which had been introduced only in Civil Lines College.



He added, “This is an excellent initiative of Punjab Higher Education Department and its goal is to impart skillful knowledge. Such kinds of workshops are necessary for the practical learning of students.”

Jafri said for the first time in Multan, a workshop on CV making was organised following the pattern of USA, UK and other developed countries.

He said that Pakistani students possess abilities and such workshops will be organised in future also to highlight their abilities in CV drafting.

Meanwhile, the students appreciated the initiative of Punjab Higher Education Department and Government Post Graduate College Civil Lines for organising such an informative workshop.

The students also made various drafts of CVs and got them checked by experts at the workshop. Certificates were also distributed among the participants.
