Suhaib Ilyasi – a household name in India for hosting a hugely successful crime show ‘India’s Most Wanted’ in late 1990s – was sentenced life imprisonment on Wednesday for the murder of his wife 17 years ago.

His wife, Anju, was found dead at her home with stab wounds on January 11, 2000, the local media reported.

Initially treated as a suicide, the investigation later led to Ilyasi’s arrest following a dowry harassment and murder case filed by Anju’s family.

The TV celebrity, however, was released on bail three months later and had been publishing a magazine on civil servants and governance ever since.

Ilyasi was found guilty of murdering his wife by a court in New Delhi on Saturday.

“We will appeal against the verdict and sentence. My client is innocent,” Ilyasi’s lawyer, Manu Sharma, was quoted as saying after today’s verdict.
