UN launches film tour in 45 countries

ISLAMABAD: The United Nations (UN) and the international humanitarian community observed Human Rights Day on Sunday followed by the launch of the ‘Human Rights Film Tour’ in 45 countries across the globe.

The initiative is a joint collaboration of International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights in Geneva (FIFDH), the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

According to an official statement, Swiss embassies all over the world will screen ‘The Crime Hunters’ from December 10, 2017 to December 10, 2018. The series will be screened in the events held based on the FIFDH’s ‘one film, one topic, one debate’ format, which includes screenings followed by debates with local NGOs, journalists, students and activists.

Film fest : ‘Our children have limited access to quality content’

In Pakistan, the film, cosmopolitanism, was also showcased in a related ceremony held at Lok Virsa, Islamabad which marked the conclusion of the ‘Human Rights through Cinematography’ film festival.

Running from November 23 to December 10, the film festival was held in different cities including Gujrat, Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Peshawar, Quetta and Rawalpindi.

The screenings were held in embassies, UN Information Centre, Goethe-Institute, universities and Pakistan National Council of Arts with the support of the European Union.

The human rights through cinematography film festival presented 25 documentaries on human rights violations across the world.

The screenings on the Human Rights Day were followed by panel discussion on “Defending Human Rights in troubled times: Dignity and Adversity”.
