KARACHI: A Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) - Pakistan legislator was booked on Tuesday for attacking media representatives and Karachi Development Authority (KDA) officials during an anti-encroachment drive in District Central.

Two separate cases were registered at the Samanabad police station against MPA Haji Anwar Raza and others for attacking KDA officials and media representatives. On behalf of the KDA additional director, FIR No 182/17 was registered against Raza and others, while FIR No 183/17 was registered on behalf of a private news channel's bureau chief.

The police have implicated sections 147, 148, 149, 427, 337A, 353 and 504/34 of the Pakistan Penal Code against the MPA for creating a law and order situation and attacking KDA and media representatives.

"There are clear directions of the Supreme Court to remove encroachments. The marriage hall was illegally constructed on a playground," said the complainant, a KDA official. "I, along with my team members, had gone to demolish the Haryali Marriage Hall on the court's directions when we came under attack," he claimed, alleging that Raza and others first abused the KDA team and later, they attacked them, injuring three of them.

In his statement, the complainant from the private news channel said his team members also came under attack while they were covering the demolition. He accused the MPA and his supporters of snatching cameras from his team and assaulting them.

The police claimed to have initiated an action against the suspects after the registration of the FIRs. Nearly half a dozen suspects have been arrested, including Abbas alias Mammu who was nominated in the FIR, the police officials said. Further investigations are under way.
