K-P to make 454 police vehicles bulletproof
Every police station, SDPO, DPO and RPO will be given such a vehicle
PESHAWAR:
After a recent suicide attack claimed the life of one of the top Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa cops Ashraf Noor, the provincial government has decided to bolster more than 450 police vehicles with bulletproof windows and side-door panels.
The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by the K-P chief secretary and attended by IGP Salahudin Mehsud and DIG finance.

A police official confirmed to The Express Tribune that after AIG Noor, travelling in his soft skin vehicle, was martyred in a suicide attack, the government felt compelled to provide proper security to its police force.
“It has been decided that initially 454 vehicles will be made bulletproof,” he added.
“A decision has been made and every police station will be issued one such vehicle,” he said, adding that every SDPO, DPO and regional police officer would also be given such a vehicle.
The decision was taken in order to provide police officials an extra layer of security due to the ongoing law and order situation and terrorist attacks, he added.
Another police official told The Express Tribune that police already had armoured vehicles as well as armoured personnel vehicles (APCs) which could withstand a direct hit from a 12.7 anti-aircraft gun. But APCs were not meant for officers as they had been provided to the police station for deployment in the high-risk areas in the event of an operation or raid, he added.

“An APC is used to transport policemen to any battle-hit area as it provides protection against small firearms. Its maximum speed is not more than 80 km per hour. Plus the number of APCs is also very limited and if officers started using them then what would the policemen in the police stations do,” argued the officer, adding that making an official jeep or two-seater vehicle bulletproof means a very comfortable and well-protected vehicle.
Also, former IGP Nasir Khan Durrani had had installed armoured plates under more than a 100 police pickups in order to reduce the chances of fatality in the event of a roadside attack.
