Pakistani designer Natasha Kamal impresses at Paris Fashion Week

Lahore-based designer was invited to open the show this year, which was attended by ambassadors from many countries

LAHORE: This year, Paris Fashion Week welcomed many debutantes and Natasha Kamal was one of them. A designer from Pakistan, she showcased her work in Paris, making the country proud.

Sommet International de La Mode (SIM) organised the Fashion Week by bringing together fashion designers from all over the world.  This fall, the second edition of SIM partnered with international networks such as Enterprise Europe, Unione Camere Piemonte, Maison Mediterranée de la Mode, Pret a Cover and ESMOD International took place.

The event was held at the well-known Plaza Athénée hotel in the heart of Parisian Haute Couture at Avenue Montaigne and was swarming with ambassadors from different countries, including Pakistan’s ambassador Moinul Haq. The theme for this year was peace, excellence and the world's talents.

Kamal was invited to open the show after being awarded the Luxury Award by Djamila Kerdoun, president and founder of DK Ambassador and SIM, and Yamna Aghrib, special juror and brand ambassador to LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE.

Kamal, who designs more modern and contemporary clothing, previously made her brand and design aesthetics noticeable at international fashion hubs like Milan, Italy. She opened the show with 10 haute couture gowns.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, the designer said, “The collection is unmistakably an evolution of my signature aesthetic, tailored for a new market. This can be found in the sweeping lines, stylised imagery and elegant proportions which give the collection a contemporary appeal.”

She continued, “It portrays a collection of western silhouettes against indigenous hand embroidered craftsmanship, has understated fall hues contrasted against champagne ones with intricately detailed beadwork, gota and crystallised embellishments.”

Bringing couture to an art gallery

According to Kamal, all this allowed her to display the beautiful complexity and detail-oriented craftsmanship of Pakistan at the fashion hub of the world.

The fashionista went on to speak about her experience at such a large international fashion platform. “Apart from showcasing my work, this event allowed me to build my network and mingle with a lot of other designers and the local press.

They also arranged meetings with LVMH and Loewe Brand ambassadors,” said Kamal. “It was an overwhelming experience to present my clothes to an entirely new market and receive such a positive response with so much appreciation.”

SIM stated, “In a period of poor communication between countries, and at a time when the respect or attention of the alien is lacking, fashion unites people and their talents. Through aesthetics and creativity they promote peace in the world because beauty speaks the global language.”
