Pakistan elected to UNIDO policy-making bodies

UNIDO 'promotes industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalisation'

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has recently been elected to the ‘main policy-making organs’ of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) during the 17th Session of the General Conference held in Vienna from November 27 to December 1, 2017.

According to the Foreign Office, Pakistan will work in the Industrial Development Board (IBD) for another four-year term from 2018 to 2021 and the Programme and Budget Committee (PBC) for another two-year term from 2018 to 2019.

Ayesha Riyaz, Pakistan’s Ambassador in Vienna, has also been elected as Vice-President of the General Conference, a press release issued by the Foreign Office said.



Pakistan has served on the 53-member IBD for 24 years and on the 27-member PBC for 16 years, the statement added.

“Pakistan’s election to the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) policymaking organs is a further demonstration of the international community’s confidence in Pakistan’s credentials. Pakistan enjoys an excellent relationship with UNIDO. The year 2018 will mark 50 years of Pakistan-UNIDO cooperation and Pakistan will continue cooperating with UNIDO in achieving the targets set out in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” the statement said.

“For developing nations like Pakistan, inclusive and sustainable industrialization plays a pivotal role not only in economic but also in social development, through job creation that reduces poverty and helps decrease inequalities,” the statement added.
