Officer Noor Ayaz Khan was martyred on the spot while his companion Samiullah sustained injuries as a result of the blast. The local political administration confirmed incident as a terrorist attack.

The body of the martyr and the injured were shifted to a local hospital where Samiullah’s condition is said to be in stable condition.

Meanwhile, the security forces cordoned off the area and started a search operation. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.

Pakistan has been battling a militant insurgency since shortly after it decided to ally with the US following its invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.

Violence has declined in recent years following a series of military offensives in the north-west border areas as well as concerted efforts to block the militants' sources of funding.

But the remnants of militant groups are still able to carry out periodic bloody attacks.
