Ending sit-in: LHC judge applauds army for saving country

Justice Qazi Amin says recovery of a missing person not an uphill task

LAHORE: Just a day after an Islamabad High Court (IHC) judge came down hard on the army’s mediation to defuse the three-week-long-sit-in on the Faizabad intersection in the federal capital, his counterpart in Lahore believed otherwise.

Justice Qazi Muhammad Amin Ahmed of the Lahore High Court (LHC) was all praise for the military on Tuesday, saying that its timely intervention saved the country from a huge catastrophe and prevented more deaths.

“There would have been more deaths if the armed forces had not intervened timely,” Justice Ahmed observed. "Everyone knows that the army has saved the country from a huge catastrophe."

Justice Ahmed was hearing a petition filed for the recovery of Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) leader Nasir Abbas Sherazi. Ali Abbas, the brother of Sherazi, contends in the petition that four armed men abducted his brother and took him away in a vehicle of Elite Force in Lahore.



The judge expressed his dismay at the inability of security agencies to recover Shirazi. He remarked that the court remained aware of the capabilities of the security forces but stressed that it was not an uphill task to recover a missing person.

Abbas contended that Sherazi was picked up days after approaching the LHC for the disqualification of Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah over his remarks against Justice Baqir Najfi after the police refused to register a case against him (Sanaullah).

Police officials informed the court that Sherazi went missing on November 1 but added that his last visit was to Balochistan. They claimed that they had not received any help from the pictures taken by safe city cameras.

On the direction of the court, a Military Intelligence official appeared before the judge. The officer told the court they have no information about Sherazi’s whereabouts.

Later, the judge directed the intelligence officials as well as the Punjab police for the recovery of Sherazi and adjourned proceedings by December 4.
