Eight die in van-truck collision

Van was carrying passengers travelling from Karachi to Naushero Feroz

HYDERABAD: A tragic accident on the M9 Motorway on Monday killed eight persons including seven members of a family belonging to Naushero Feroz district. The collision between a van, bearing registration number JF-7217, and a truck occurred near Nooriabad SITE area in Jamshoro district.

The van was carrying members of the Tunio family from the Karachi airport, where some of the deceased had reached Sunday night after performing Umrah, to Wali Dino Tunio village in Patidan town of Naushero Feroz.

According to Jamshoro police, six of the deceased died on the spot while two succumbed to their injuries at Liaquat University Hospital (LUH), Jamshoro. The other four injured were later shifted from LUH, Jamshoro to LUH, Hyderabad.

The police added that the accident happened before dawn. The front of the van was completely smashed when its driver tried to overtake the truck.

The deceased family members included civil surgeon incharge of Patidan Government Hospital Ghulam Mustafa Tunio, his brother Ali Muhammad Tunio and his only son 20-year-old Shah Muhammad Tunio, former provincial secretary Hakim Ali Tunio's wife 50-year-old Sakina Tunio, 28-year-old Rehan Tunio, 24-year-old Mehreen Tunio and Zahida Tunio. The van driver, 36-year-old Ghulam Hyder Sanjrani, also died in the accident.

The bodies were taken to the village after medico-legal formalities were completed at LUH Hyderabad. According to the family sources, funeral prayers for the deceased will be held this morning.

The truck was impounded by the Nooriabad police. However, an FIR has still to be registered.
