A whale shark was spotted in Pakistani waters near the Karachi harbour on Saturday.

“An independent observer spotted a whale shark, 10 nautical miles from Karachi Harbour,” WWF-Pakistan said in a statement.

The wildlife conservation organisation said the incredible species has seen its numbers plummet by 50% over the last 75 years.

Giant blue whale, calf sighted near Karachi waters

Contrary to its name, the whale shark is not a whale. It is a fish, and in fact the largest fish in the world, which can grow up to a length of 60-feet.  It is mostly found in open waters of the tropical oceans.

In September, a gigantic mother blue whale and her calf were sighted off Churna Island. This was the first sighting of living blue whale in Pakistan.
