Badin police foil marriage of underage girl

Complaint under Sindh Child Marriages Restraint Act, 2013, registered against perpetrator

HYDERABAD: Badin police foiled the marriage of an underage girl to a man of her father's age on Saturday night and arrested the groom, the nikkah khwan and the girl's father.

Badin police station SHO Anwar Laghari said that the police received information from a family source that a girl, identified as Murk, aged between 12 and 13 years old, was being wed to 44-year-old Abdul Khaliq Rahimo. The wedding was taking place in ward number five in the Quaidabad locality of Badin.

The SHO claimed that during the initial interrogation, Rahimo disclosed that he paid money to Murk's father, Jan Muhammad, to marry his daughter. Rahimo is already married and has three children from his first wife, added SHO Laghari.

He said although Rahimo was 44 years old, he wrote he was 25 years old in the nikkah nama [marriage registration certificate]. An FIR was lodged on the state's complaint under the Sindh Child Marriages Restraint Act, 2013, nominating Rahimo, Jan Muhammad and nikkah khwan Daud Jat.
