ISLAMABAD: Minister for National Health Services Saira Afzal Tarar Wednesday inaugurated a Bone Marrow Transplant Centre at Akbar Niazi Teaching Hospital in Bara Kahu.

Akbar Niazi Hospital is the teaching hospital of a private medical college — Islamabad Medical and Dental College. This is the third transplant centre established for thalassemia patients in Islamabad. In the public sector, currently, only the Pakistan Institute of Medical (Pims) offer transplant services.

The 20-bed centre at Niazi hospital will treat 50 per cent of its patients for free following a policy by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council policy which stipulates that teaching hospitals cannot charge hospital expenses from half of its indoor patients.

Saira Afzal Tarar said that there are only a few BMT centres in the country which are insufficient to meet the needs of the people.
