Mehwish Hayat croons Nazia Hassan's 'Boom Boom' and it's giving us all the feels
'Punjab Nahi Jaungi' starlet is amongst many new heroines who are trying their hand at singing
KARACHI:
Mehwish Hayat is an acting powerhouse. The starlet has aced every role she has portrayed on-screen so far, especially her most recent character Amal, in the blockbuster, Punjab Nahi Jaungi.
But acting isn't her only expertise. This jack of all trades can hold quite a tune and boy, does she do it exceptionally well! In an interview with T Edit magazine, Mehwish previously revealed that she had few concerts lined up in the US and and we just stumbled upon a clip from her performance in Arizona. Needless to say, we had to share it with you!
'Punjab Nahi Jaungi's' 'Raunaq-e-Aashiqui' will remind you of 'DDLJ'
Singing a rendition of the iconic Boom Boom by the legendary Nazia Hassan, the actor seemed to be having a ball of a time on the stage. And judging from the clip shared on Mehwish's Instagram, the audience seems to agree with us. Have a look here:

Of course, this isn't the first time the Dillagi star had showcased her singing chops. She made her Coke Studio debut back in season 9, alongside Shiraz Uppal in Tu Hi Tu.
A member of the show’s production crew previously stated, “Mehwish has done an impressive job as a singer as she was able to hold her own opposite Shiraz.” We concur!

Mehwish has also recorded some OSTs and theme songs for various television serials. Some of her singles include Tell Me Why (Meri Behan Aya), Pani Barsa (Man Jali), Mujhse Ab Meri Mohabbat Ke Fasane Na Kaho (Talkhiyaan) and a duet with Fariha Pervez for the Mirat-ul-Uroos theme song, Har Saans Gawahi Deta Hai.
And Mehwish isn't the only actress who has tried to broaden her horizons with singing. Many other divas have made similar attempts, some of whom seem to have emerged as winners, other... well, not so much.
Mahesh Bhatt is positively obsessed with 'Punjab Nahi Jaungi'
A video of Meera Jee, singing the Titanic theme song My Heart Will Go On, for instance, has been doing the rounds on social media these days. While most have been mocking the Kasam star ruining perhaps the most iconic film song of all time, we appreciate Meera's unshaken confidence as she reads the lyrics off of her phone.

And then there was Urwa Hocane's poor attempt to jump onto the bandwagon and promote younger sister Mawra's debut Bollywood project Sanam Teri Kasam by posting a short clip of herself singing on Instagram. It was all fun and games till we realised that the performance was taking a questionable turn when the actor didn’t hold back and sang the highest notes through.

And much to our horror, the Udaari star didn't stop there. Urwa later went on to release her first single Ao Le Kar Chaloun. Remember the alarming moment when she breaks into some those odd and questionable dance moves in those doll-like outfits? And, after 24/7 Lak Hilna from Punjab Nahi Jaungi, I believe we have established that the starlet definitely cannot groove.

In Bollywood, many divas, such as former Miss World, Priyanka Chopra, Alia Bhatt, Sonakshi Sinha and Parineeti Chopra have also lent their voices for some projects.
While Parineeti, Alia and Sonakshi sung for their own movie, the Baywatch starlet was a step ahead the rest and released singles with international superstars like Pitbull and Will.i.am.

In My City trended at number one on Twitter several minutes after release. And her second single Exotic featured international rapper, Pitbull. In 2015, she sang the title song for Dil Dhadakne Do with Farhan Akhtar.

Following the footsteps of her cousin Priyanka, Ishaqzaade star Parineeti Chopra also recently made her singing debut. From the soundtrack of her movie Meri Pyaari Bindu, Parineeti’s song Maana Ke Hum Yaar Nahin gave us all kinds of feels!

Similarly, Alia Bhatt made her singing debut in critically acclaimed movie Highway and followed it up with an unplugged version of Samjhawan in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya. While the song in the film is sung by Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal, Alia’s version also garnered much praises from the industry.

After Alia came Sonakshi, who made her singing debut with Aaj Mood Ishqaholic Hai. Sadly, the preppy, dance number is heavily auto-tuned and you can barely recognise the Dabangg star's voice.

However, even after receiving flak for her debut, the Akira starlet didn't quit and went on to become a playback singer for one of her subsequent movies.
“It (the song) is about how the girl will not stay silent, but fight back and that’s the spirit. We were shooting the music video and every time I went to give a shot, I would end up singing it with all my zest. It’s just one of those songs,” DNA quoted the Noor actor as saying.
'Punjab Nahi Jaungi' trailer makes us want to say, 'Shut up and take my money!'
“When we first got in the studio to record vocals, I was blown away by her dedication to get her vocals and pronunciation perfect, regardless of how many takes it took. Nargis was the right fit for this song and video, along with Kardinal, and I hope people like what we’ve put together,” he said.
Parineeti Chopra makes singing debut and we are impressed
It surely is a pleasure listening to actors such as Mehwish, Alia and Parineeti crooning, while on the other hand, you might want to put cotton balls in your ears to stop whatever torture Meera, Urwa, Sonakshi and Priyanka might subject you to. Guess it's better for some to stick to what they know: acting.

It was recently reported that Nargis Fakhri will be making her singing debut with forthcoming single Habitaan Vigaad Di. Singer-composer Parichay, who has collaborated with the Rockstar starlet for the song, says he was blown away after hearing her voice. Written by Kumaar, the Indo-Canadian single will also feature rapper Kardinal Offishall.
“When we first got in the studio to record vocals, I was blown away by her dedication to get her vocals and pronunciation perfect, regardless of how many takes it took. Nargis was the right fit for this song and video, along with Kardinal, and I hope people like what we’ve put together,” he said.
