PESHAWAR: At least two policemen were killed early on Monday when unidentified assailants opened fire at a temporary check-post near Malakand agency.

District Police Officer Mardan Dr Mian Mohammad Saeed told The Express Tribune that two locals were walking at a distance when asked by the police to stop, upon which they shot the security officials in the head, killing them on the spot.

Hawaldar Farhad, 25, and Sepoy Nawaz, 33, were rushed to Tehsil Headquarters Hospital by rescue teams.

The assailants managed to flee the crime scene. Saeed further added that the area had been cordoned off and a search operation was underway.

According to sources, police set up the temporary check-post after receiving prior information of a bid to smuggle narcotics into the settled areas. “It was not a permanent check point since we had information that narcotics were to be smuggled through this route,” said DPO Saeed.

Locals speaking to The Express Tribune stated that besides narcotics the nearby check post was also conducting an operation on smuggling of vehicles for over a month.
