'Strategic convergences': Foreign Secretary arrives in Washington

WASHINGTON: Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir arrived in Washington on Wednesday evening to hold talks with US officials as the two countries seek ways to sort out differences and find "strategic convergences" to move their relationship forward.

The top Pakistani diplomat is visiting Washington for two-day talks at the invitation of US Special Representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan, Marc Grossman, who will  lead the American side.      Bashir will spearhead the Pakistani delegation in two rounds of meetings of a steering group.

The meetings will be held at the State Department and the Pakistani embassy. Director General Americas in the Foreign Ministry Suhail Khan and Spokesperson of the Foreign Office Tehmina Janjua are also part of the Pakistani delegation.

The meetings take place in the backdrop of tensions that arose from Central Intelligence Agency contractor, Raymond Davis killing of two Pakistanis and Islamabad's objections to frequent drone strikes in Pakistani Tribal Areas.

Security and foreign affairs experts believe that cooperative relations between Pakistan and the United States are critical to the outcome of the decade-old Afghan conflict.

Both sides will issue a joint statement at the end of the meetings, also to be attended by Assistant Secretary of State Robert Blake and Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Thomas Nides.

In addition to bilateral issues, the discussions are expected to cover efforts towards resolution of the Afghan conflict and regional situation with reference to Pakistan's eastern neighbour India.

Billoo Bhaya | 13 years ago | Reply Though I think our Foreign Secretary is a good and honest man, I think his trip is serves no purpose. It is time to chart a new course, just when we established diplomatic ties with China against the wishes of USA. It was a bold move then that has paid huge dividends. The same is required now. As a footnote: The French King Louis XVI supported the American Revolution with blood and money, which bankrupted France and caused his head to be chopped off. The French made a deal that once the American's defeated the British, both parties would jointly make peace with Britain, because the French wanted to recover Canada they had lost to Britain. Guess what the Founding Fathers of America did? They secretly negotiated with the British and signed a peace treaty with them in Ghent, Holland to the detriment of the French. If they can do this to the French, you can guess what they can do to Pakistan?
