TEVTA has certified 48,000 labourers

Chairman says this number will be increased to 65,000 next year

LAHORE: The Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority (TEVTA) has provided 48,000 certificates in different 15 trades under the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

This number will increase to 65,000 next year. This was stated by TEVTA Chairman Irfan Qaiser Sheikh as he spoke to a ceremony held at the authority’s secretariat on Monday.

As per the RPL, uncertified skilled workers will get certification after passing theory and practical tests of their concerned trade, he said. The chairman added that this programme was designed according to the requirement of national and international markets.

Irfan observed that a similar programme was started in the United States by former President Barack Obama and Punjab has adopted the same model. He went on say that in previous years, around 25,842 people registered for this course and 23,455 of them succeeded. “TEVTA is striving to increase the minimum stipend of a labourer from Rs25,000 to Rs30,000,” he said.

Candidates of a minimum 18 years of age with two years industry experience, evidence of any earlier training, record of employment, use of skills and references are registered for the training, he said. The chairman added the certificate was provided after integrated assessment, (knowledge, skill and attitude) theory and practical.

Technology first: TEVTA to bump up IT students to 60,000

The chairman said that the course is completely free-of-cost and for those who could not acquire skills from the formal technical education system. About 15 vocational short courses, including auto electrician, auto CAD (civil), machine embroidery, mason, plumber and sanitary installer, electrician, HVACR, beautician and building painter are being offered for registration.
