ISLAMABAD: Work began on Sunday on laying a new astroturf at the Shahnaz Sheikh Hockey Stadium in Rawalpindi. Former Olympian Shahnaz Sheikh, after whom the stadium has been named, said that the process will take around 10 days to complete. He added that they had invited officials from Holland and Australia to visit the stadium and monitor the process of laying the turf. “A match between former Olympians will be played at the stadium once the astroturf is laid,” Sheikh announced, adding that renovations to the 50,000 seater stadium will be a gift to the people of Rawalpindi. Renovations at the stadium are expected to cost around Rs149 million. Once complete, Sheikh said that they planned to set up academies, including for the men and for women players. Shahnaz thanked the Punjab government and the Punjab Sports Board and local politicians for working to revive the game in Rawalpindi.
