ISLAMABAD: The government on Thursday announced plans to set up the first national resource centre for women in the capital.

The National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW), National History and Literary Heritage Division (NHLH) and the National Library of Pakistan signed an agreement to build the National Women Resource Centre at the library.

Adviser to Prime Minister on National History Irfan Siddiqui said that promoting book reading habits among women will ultimately inculcate a positive trend amongst the younger generation.

“Giving respect to women and protecting their dignity is our national duty. Similarly educating women about their rights and social problems is critical to bring development and prosperity in the country,” he said.

Hailing efforts of NCSW staff for setting up the Resource Center, Siddiqui said the centre would enable women to access a variety of books on diverse subjects, research materials on women related topics, articles and journals.

Moreover, he hoped that the centre would help women conduct research on different topics.

Women visiting the centre will be exempted from paying any charges and will even be provided transport facility on specific days.

NCSW Chairperson Khawar Mumtaz said the resource centre would be a milestone in transforming the lives of women as it would provide a platform to consolidate information available on women issues in different government departments, universities, research organisations and individuals.

“The National Women Resource Centre is part of NCSW’s efforts to pursue the goal of steering and promoting research on women-related issues in line with its mandate,” Mumtaz added.
