KARACHI: The famous carts selling flavored icy treats - called gola ganda - in Dhoraji Society might not serve Karachiites anymore, as the Sindh High Court (SHC) directed on Tuesday the police to clear these unauthorised encroachments from the public road.

A two-judge bench, headed by Justice Irfan Saadat Khan, further told the Bahadurabad police SHO to submit a report on compliance of the court's order by the next hearing, the date for which is to be later notified by the office.

The residents of the locality had approached the court, arguing nearly 40 carts were illegally running their business on the public road, causing great inconvenience to them.

The judges were told that the stalls were set up in different localities of Dhoraji Society without any legal permission from the authorities concerned, hindering the flow of vehicular traffic and leading to traffic jams.

The petitioners said the residents were facing difficulties due to a large number of the stalls as well the visitors from all over the city who park their vehicles on roadsides. Therefore, the court was pleaded to direct the local government and police authorities concerned to remove the illegal carts and stalls immediately.

The bench's head, Justice Khan, remarked that Dhoraji is known for gola ganda and customers from all over Karachi visit it. However, he observed that it could not be allowed at the cost of inconvenience to residents.

Therefore, the judges directed the Bahadurabad SHO to ensure all illegal carts and stalls are removed from the roads in the area, which were causing problems to the residents. It also directed the police officer to submit a report on the compliance of this order by the next hearing.
