KARACHI: Eight people died in separate incidents of target killings in Karachi on Tuesday.

Unidentified men on motorcycles opened fire on a company van and shot dead one person in the Landhi Joga area. Another man was killed in a firing incident in Surjani Town.

A body, which police sources said had been tortured before being shot, was found in Korangi Six. Another body was also recovered from beneath Lasbela Bridge.

Two political workers, one belonging to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and one to Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) had also been shot dead on Monday.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik had earlier claimed that the government’s measures against target killing were paying off.

Malik had said that the government was taking strict action against the target killing problem, adding that some of the people involved were taking refuge by affiliating themselves with political parties. He then appeared to contradict himself by denying that any political party workers were involved in target killings.
