Educating children: Learning through play

LAHORE:

A series of workshops were hosted by The New School Beaconhouse, on Sunday, to guide parents and teach them the new methods of education for their children. Children from the ages of three to 14 were involved in various activities for enhanced learning. Parents attended the free workshop on how to control their child’s future through counselling and teaching techniques.

Nine workshops covering the importance of learning in various ways including play were scheduled throughout the day.

For kids aged 3 to 6, there was a Project Based Learning workshop and a Using Technology with Young Children. Kids aged 6 to 11 were offered Learning to Love Maths, Global Perspectives of Education and Developing Leadership Skills for Kids. How to Raise a Reader, Learning through Film Making and Music Matters were the worksops set out for kids aged 11 to 14.

Beaconhouse School System senior coordinator Ali Tabraiz said, “Kids between the ages of 3 and 6 mostly learn through play. Co-curricular activities are highly important at this point.” TNS Beaconhouse CEO Sofia Kasuri said, “Kids can learn even from playing in the dirt. They don’t always have to sit in classrooms.”

More than 280 families attended the workshop at the Gulberg campus. The interactive workshops aimed at explaining to parents how a child can learn and develop interest in various subjects. Parents and kids were briefed on the latest technology being introduced in schools. Classroom technologies expert Tabinda Mazhar showed kids how to interact more effectively through interactive whiteboards and voting devices through which tests can be conducted and checked.
