ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal met on Friday with Interpol President Meng Hongwei in Beijing, stated a press release issued by Ministry of Interior on Friday.
The interior minister is currently on a five-day visit to China to attend Interpol’s ministerial conference.
Meng Hongwei was elected as Interpol’s president last year. He would serve as president of Interpol until 2020.
Meanwhile, the interior minister also held a meeting with the Palestinian delegation. Iqbal congratulated the Palestinian delegation on becoming an Interpol member. Pakistan had supported Palestine’s bid for membership.
Interpol approves membership for State of Palestine
Interpol had voted to admit Palestine as a full member a couple of days ago, dealing a significant diplomatic blow to Israel, which strenuously lobbied against Palestinian admission.
In a secret vote, Palestine’s membership was approved by 75 to 24 votes, with 34 abstentions – exceeding the two-thirds requirement of ‘yes’ votes.
Set up almost a century ago, Interpol was designed to help countries share police intelligence and cooperate against crime across international borders, including terrorism and human trafficking. It now has 192 members.
