LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Spokesman Fawad Chaudhary has strongly criticised former premier Nawaz Sharif for ridiculing the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) and other national institutions.

Addressing a news conference on Tuesday, he claimed that deposed prime minister charged sheeted and ridiculed the apex court and at the same time he (Sharif) maintained he is not against the national institutions. “If one is held accountable for corruption, is this tantamount to making a conspiracy against democracy,” he asked.

Chaudhary urged the top court to take notice of the Sharif’s press conference held in Islamabad on Tuesday (yesterday). He said that Nawaz has returned to the country to save his political career and not to face accountability. “Under these circumstances, how could we expect from these people to bring a change in the country,” he added.

Referring to Nawaz’s appearance before the accountability court, he slammed the PML-N leader for reaching venue in an escort of 45 vehicles. He added the government spent millions of rupees for his five-minute appearance before the accountability court.

He was also agitated by the delaying tactics used by PML-N leaders. “They are making such moves to avoid punishment. In fact, they are wasting the court’s time.”

The PTI spokesman observed that the prevailing situation in the country demanded a fresh general election in the country.

Replying to a question, he said, “There is no chance of Imran Khan’s disqualification in any legal case he is facing.” He maintained the establishment is not powerful enough to challenge the people’s will. “Those who have the people’s support cannot be removed.”

Chaudhary said it is important for the PTI to replace opposition leader Syed Khursheed Shah so that they are involved in consultation for an interim government.

When he was speaking in Islamabad earlier this month, Fawad said the PTI would ensure that Nawaz returned to Pakistan to face accountability and the charges levelled against him.

He pointed that the Avenfield properties case had been lying with NAB for 18 years. He added that there had also been no investigations on the Hudaibiya Paper Mills case. He stated that the latter case had been pending for some 17 years and it would gather dust like the rest if the Supreme Court failed to take immediate action.
