Student clashes: Dispute over music turns ugly

Scuffle broke out when a member of IJT tried to stop a fellow student of JSSF from playing songs on his mobile phone.

Over a dozen students were wounded during a clash between the Jeay Sindh Student Federation (JSSF)and Islami Jamiat-e-Talba (IJT) at Dawood College of Engineering and Technology located on MA Jinnah Road.


The scuffle broke out after a member of the IJT tried to stop a fellow student from the JSSF from playing songs on his mobile phone. A heated exchange of words ensued and the argument soon turned violent, at which the students took up sticks and iron rods to attack each other.

A total of 13 students were injured, said police official Amir Farooqi. They were taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. The injured students included Munawar Soomro, Sunni Jhokio, Kamran Laghari, Saqib Jhokio, Ejaz and Nabeel Kamran from the JSSF and Salman, Zeeshan, Rana Omar, Muhammad Ali and Shahid Rashid from the IJT.

Classes were suspended and the Rangers were called in. No arrests were made and neither was a case registered, according to Farooqi.

Further clashes

A similar incident took place at the Federal Urdu University when a fight broke out between activists of the Pakhtoon Students Federation and Imamia Students Organisation. Members of both organisations took to the road and stopped traffic. They dispersed only after a heavy contingent of police reached the scene.
