Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa has said that enhanced defence ties between Pakistan and Australia can give impetus to broader bilateral cooperation, especially in the fields of education, investment, regional connectivity and trade.
The chief of the army staff (COAS), who is in Canberra on a two-day visit, expressed these views during his meetings with Australia’s civil and military leaders.
According to an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement, Gen Bajwa held meetings with members of the Australian Senate’s Committee for Foreign and Defence Affairs, headed by Senator David Fawcett, Chief of Defence Staff Air Chief Marshall Mark Binskin and Air Force Chief Air Marshal Gavin Davies.
The COAS also visited the Australian Joint Operations and Planning Headquarters and Force Command Headquarters, said the ISPR.
The host country’s leadership praised Pakistan’s contribution and achievements in the war against terrorism and acknowledged the sacrifices of the nation and its army, the military’s media wing added.
Gen Bajwa also interacted with dignitaries at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute and the Office of National Assessments, both of which advise their government on policy issues.
The army chief said he was humbled by Australia’s goodwill for Pakistan and desire to enhance bilateral relations.
