Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that imposing tougher sanctions on North Korea over its nuclear missile programme would not change the leadership in Pyongyang, but could lead to large-scale human suffering.

Putin, speaking after a BRICs summit in China, also warned against further ramping up military hysteria around North Korea, saying that could lead to "global catastrophe."

Putin warned that unless a diplomatic solution to the North Korean nuclear impasse can be reached, saying imposing further sanctions on Pyongyang would be useless.

"Resorting to just any sanctions in this situation is useless and inefficient," Putin told reporters following an international summit in China. "All of this can lead to a global planetary catastrophe and a great number of victims."

kulbhushan yadav | 7 years ago | Reply Putin is playing a dangerous game here. NK is threatening US and nor Russia. I wonder what would Putin say if lets just say Chechen get their hands on a dirty nuclear bomb with a missile that can hit Moscow?
