To provide a forum to students from across the country to showcase their talents, the Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) organised a three-day “All Pakistan Students Regional Competition 2011” at its campus here on Thursday.
More the fifty students from different cities, including Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan, Sargodha and Faisalabad, have been selected to participate the regional competitions, which include speech, essay writing, national song singing, flowers arrangement, and stage play competitions.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest, AlOU Vice Chancellor Dr Nazir Sangi, said that the objective of the event is to promote extracurricular activities by providing a platform to students to express their talents in a variety of fields.
On the first day of the regional competitions, English and Urdu debates along with national song singing competitions were held. A total of 10 students were selected to compete in the debates, while seven students took part in the singing competition.
Topics for the debates included “Educate Nation and Eliminate Terrorism”, “Gender Discrimination in Islam” and “Build Quaid’s Pakistan”.
“I’m exited to be part of these competitions and I have been preparing consistently for the past two weeks,” said Uzma Mushtaq, a participant from Karachi, while talking to The Express Tribune. She had earlier won a speech competition in her city and had been hoping to take part in a regional level speech competition. She appreciated AIOU for organising the event and hoped that the university will organise more events like these.
Another student from Sargodha, Mehrin Malik, participating in the national song singing competition said she was “honoured to be part of the competition”. She had won a national song singing competition in her locality and aspires to win the first prize in the regional competition.
