Body of teenager who dove into Jhelum River to win bet recovered

Ali Abrar jumped into the river but whisked away by gushing stream

ABBOTTABAD: The body of an ill-fated teenage boy, who died after being dared by his peers to jump in the Jhelum River, recovered on Wednesday.

Six friends from Gujranwala, including 19-year-old Ali Abrar, were on a pleasure trip to Galyats on August 18 and gathered at the famous picnic point at Kuneer.

In a video footage, Abrar’s friends could be heard challenging him to swim through the stream. The youth had been promised Rs15,000 cash and an expensive mobile phone in exchange for his stint.

Abrar eventually dived into the river but was whisked away by the gushing stream.



Rescue 1122 Kotli Satiyan section fished out the body from the river and handed it over Abbottabad Police (Bakaut) who after legal formalities handed over to the aggrieved family.

All the five friends, who were booked under section 322, are on a judicial remand and will be produced before the court on August 25 (Friday).
