Facebook-owned WhatsApp and Instagram have focused on Snapchat’s most iconic feature -- Stories.

Where Instagram has managed to create its own Stories following, WhatsApp’s 'Status' version didn’t manage to create the same spark but given the high number of WhatsApp users, the feature was complimented well and amassed around 175million daily users.

Android O is officially called Android Oreo

It was about time some changes were made to make WhatsApp’s stories rendition to make it different from its competitors.

With the new update, WhatsApp lets you update your status with colourful, meme-like text posts instead of photos and videos.

The feature, which is currently being rolled out is a lot like Facebook's colourful status update which came a few weeks ago.

Simply write snippet of text with a colourful background appearing and you can customise the font. You can also link out to other websites from within a text post much like what Snapchat recently introduced.

These changes take them away from the Insta-like pictorial aspect and focus more on text-based features.

It certainly foreshadows what the two apps are known for and the feature may fare well for WhatsApp.

WhatsApp rolls out major update for iPhone users

It remains to be seen whether WhatsApp becomes the go to app to update statuses updates but given the high number of WhatsApp users, any change will certainly benefit the app.

The feature is still in the rolling out phase meaning some users may not immediately receive the update.
