ISLAMABAD: Rawalpindi-Islamabad Institution of Engineers Pakistan (IEP-RI) on Saturday held a seminar to raise awareness about the devastating impact natural and man-made calamities are having on our environment.

The awareness session was aimed at preparing engineers to mitigate human sufferings in the aftermath of any such disaster.

Renowned expert on the topic Engr Muhammad Abid was the key-note speaker of the session and gave a detailed presentation on various aspects of disaster and its management to curtail the losses.

He emphasised the need for evolving a proper risk management mechanism and preparing people to effectively respond to natural calamities.

Global warming, climate change and melting of glaciers are posing a serious threat to the environment and everyone needs to be prepared so that its dangerous effects could be reduced, he added.

Abid drew participants’ attention towards risky impact of man-made disasters like emission of nuclear and chemical gases and called for controlling these activities. Abid, however, proposed planting trees as an effective solution to this problem.

The event was the part of the continuing professional development (CPE) program that IEP-RI had started for the capacity-building of young engineers.

Abid also called for developing a strong rescue, evacuation and rehabilitation plan at organisational level to achieve the desired results. The seminar was also addressed by Engr Najumuddin and Engr Shafiqur Rehman.
