A 17-year-old boy has been arrested after he was accused of vandalising a glass panel on the Holocaust Memorial in Boston and will be charged with willful and malicious destruction of property.

Police were alerted around 6:40 pm and the boy was held down by two bystanders until they arrived.

“The accused had been seen throwing what appeared to be a rock at the memorial,” said the witnesses, according to a Boston Police Department report.

The incident is also being investigated by the BPD’s Civil Rights Unit in order to determine whether additional charges need to be filed or not.

“I’m grateful for the quick response and the community help which led to the swift arrest of the suspect responsible for the damage done to the Holocaust Memorial. Clearly, this type of behaviour will not be tolerated in our city. And, in light of the recent events and unrest in Charlottesville, it’s sad to see a young person choose to engage in such senseless and shameful behaviour,” said BPD Commissioner William Evans.

The Mayor of Boston was “saddened to see such a despicable action.”

The six glass towers are lit internally and etched with millions of numbers which represent tattoo’s on the arms of many Jews sent to Nazi death camps.

The Boston Police Department even condemned the incident and released a statement.

This memorial was opened for the public in 1995. However, in June, another man, named James Isaac, 21, threw a rock and shattered the same glass panel but he has pleaded not guilty to vandalism charges.
