Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Karachi leader Ali Haider Zaidi shared on Sunday what claimed an iqama (a UAE firm work permit)  belonging to Kulsoom Nawaz, the wife of ousted PM Nawaz Sharif.

He tweeted that “the whole family is involved in money laundering” and attached a picture of what appeared to be Kulsoom’s iqama.

However, it could not be verified if the iqama was real or not. The document does appear to have been stamped by an election commission official.

Zaidi’s tweet came just a few days after Kulsoom’s nomination papers were filed to contest the forthcoming by-election in NA-120, the seat her husband was forced to vacate last month after the Supreme Court disqualified him for not declaring his iqama in his nomination papers for the 2013 general elections.

The by-election will be held in about 45 days.

Earlier, it was decided that Shehbaz Sharif, Nawaz’s brother, will run for the vacant seat. However, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz later changed its decision believing that he should continue to remain the chief minister of Punjab.

Others in the race for NA-120 include Dr Yasmeen Rashid of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Hafiz Mian Zubair Kardar of the Pakistan People’s Party and advocate Ishtiaq Chaudhary of the Pakistan Awami Tehreek.

    Unlike judges, having a Iqama or drawing a salary from other source doesn’t disqualify PM or any MNA according to constitution, PM’s lawyer had explained that to learned judges, despite that they had made up their minds to disqualify him so they used that very weak point to disqualify him. Now ECP to rake action not only on this, but all Aqaba holders, in fact, ECP must order to refund all money these Aqua holders drew from Public Fund, and of course must be punished like a foreigner, including NAWAZ SHARIF.Recommend

    Iqama means you are citizen of Dubai, you can transfer money from your number 2 accounts in Dubai to Switzerland, London, and any where you have your safe heavens?Recommend

    On the one hand the Sharif family were exiled, and on the other hand their residency papers for countries they lived in are being used to malign them! If you don’t want politicians to have iqamas, don’t forcibly exile them.Recommend

    @Imran Qadri:
    He was disqualified because he had a job contract, drawing salary of 10K Durhams. In other words he was ghost employee of another company while being PM, which he didn’t declare. Recommend

    Please note it is not illegal to have a Iqama. It is however ILLEGAL not to declare it in your nomination papers! Do not twist the facts. Lets see if Kulsoom Nawaz has declared this in her Nomination papers.Recommend
