Derelict Moj Garh Fort in desperate need of renovation

Mighty structure was built by Emperor Maroof Khan Kehrani in 1743 AD

BAHAWALPUR: Moj Garh Fort, located 70 kilometres from Bahawalnagar along the Yazman-Fort Abbas Road in Thandi Khoi, has lost much of its built heritage over the years and almost all its once-majestic forts.

The historical structure was built by Emperor Maroof Khan Kehrani in 1743 AD. It is among several forts situated in Bahawalpur State that served as the stronghold of many emperors, rajas, maharajas and others.



The fort has witnessed several battles but despite incurring heavy damage, part of the structure is still standing tall for centuries. The lack of the government and Auqaf Department has turned this historic marvel into ruins.



Moj Garh Fort was built using solid bricks and mud. It was decorated with glazed tiles and is surrounded by a single dome which stands 400 yards south of the fort. Although not much of the fort’s building is left, but traces could still be found dating back to the mughal architecture.

While speaking to The Express Tribune, local resident Allah Wasaya said, “This fort could have become a great tourist attraction if the government had taken interest in restoring the structure to its past glory.”

He added, “Tourism promotes business in the area which helps in improving the lives of people living in Cholistan.”



Another local Muhammad Akbar told The Express Tribune, “The crumbling structure of Moj Garh Fort is still standing and the government should take some imminent steps to preserve it.” He maintained, “It should be rebuilt so that it could serve as a great tourist attraction.”

Similarly, Usama Moazzam, a resident of Bahawalnagar, said, “My friends told me about this fort but when I came here, I was shocked to see the structure in bad shape.” He pointed out, “But even now, if the government shows interest in preserving this mighty fort it could be preserved.”

He complained that roads leading to the fort are weary which creates hassle for the people and tourists.
