Federal govt challenges SC verdict on NAB chief appointment

ISLAMABAD: The federal government on Saturday challenged the Supreme Court's verdict which declared the appoitment of former NAB chairman Deedar Hussain Shah unconstitutional.

Filing an appeal on behalf of federation, advocate Abdul Hafeez Peerzada stated the court's notification on the appointment is flawed. Peerzada said the decision does not fulfill the requirements laid down by the law as he went on to cite procedural flaws.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had declared the appointment void after approving petitions of Opposition Leader Chaudhry Nisar and freelance journalist Shahid Orakzai.

A three-member bench, headed by Justice Javed Iqbal, declared the appointment illegal in a short order issued.

The appointment of chairman NAB had been challenged in the Supreme Court by Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), who contended that the mandatory requirement for consultation with the opposition for the appointment of Chairman NAB, as enshrined in the Constitution, was not fulfilled.
