ABBOTTABAD:
The Neurosurgery Department of Ayub Teaching Hospital (ATH) Abbottabad on Tuesday performed its first ever brain surgery on a four year old boy Asim from Manshera in Hazara Division. The child was suffering from Encephalocele, a neural tube defect characterised by sac-like protrusions of the brain and the membranes that cover it through openings in the skull. The Neurosurgery Department Associate Professor Dr Abdul Aziz conducted the surgery and removed a five kilogramme herniated sac and repaired the opening in the skull of Asim. Doctors said Asim’s condition was stable and normal and may leave hospital after two days of treatment.
