Two civilians killed, 11 injured in Indian firing along LoC

India claims two suspected separatists and a soldier were killed in held Kashmir clash

SRINAGAR: At least two civilians were killed and 11 others wounded in cross-border firing by Indian soldiers on Tuesday, officials said.

"A man and woman were martyred and seven others were wounded in firing by Indian troops in Sumahni sector," local government official Chaudhry Guftar told AFP.

Another government official Raja Arshad said four people were also wounded when another volley of shots were fired across the border into Nakyal sector.

Meanwhile, India said two suspected separatists and an Indian soldier were killed in held Kashmir along the de facto border, where the two sides traded fire for a second day.



Indian army spokesperson Colonel Rajesh Kalia said soldiers exchanged fire with unknown combatants who, he claimed, tried to cross the Line of Control (LoC) into Indian-held Kashmir.

"Two bodies and three weapons were recovered from the site of the firing," Kalia told AFP.

On Monday, an Indian soldier was killed during an exchange of fire along the de facto border in held Kashmir. The incident came just a day after four Pakistani soldiers drowned into Neelum River as Indian troops targeted their vehicle along the LoC.

Kashmir has been divided between India and Pakistan since the end of British colonial rule in 1947. Both countries claim the Himalayan territory in full and have fought two wars over it.
