PESHAWAR: Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Governor Engineer Iqbal Zafar Jhagra on Tuesday said that the menace of terrorism could be defeated by maintaining unity.

“We can get rid of the curse of terrorism by maintaining complete unity in our ranks,” the governor said at the distribution of compensation cheques among heirs of those who died in Parachinar terrorist attacks as well as those who were injured in the incident.

A total of 75 people were killed and around 300 suffered injuries in the explosions that devastated Turi Market in Parachinar on June 23.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had asked the governor to meet heirs of the victims of the twin blasts and other affected persons to discuss the assistance package for them.

“The state,” he added, “is responsible for protecting the life and property of the people and the present government is very much fulfilling its responsibilities in this respect.”

“The elements involved in the heinous act of terrorism will be brought to court of law and justice,” he remarked.

The governor handed over cheques amounting to one million rupees to the heirs of each martyr and 500,000 rupees to each injured. Members of parliament from the Kurram tribal agency, senior civil and military officials, tribal elders and close relatives of the victims were also present on the occasion.

While expressing his deep sympathies with members of the bereaved families, the governor said the monetary support could never be an alternative to the precious lives. “However, it is just a token of the deeply felt grief on our part.”

“The terrorists,” he added, “are out to deter our national unity and integrity but they can never succeed.”

The governor said all-out efforts were underway to ensure security and stability in the region and in this connection sacrifices being rendered by the tribal people as well as the armed forces were praiseworthy.

The governor assured the bereaved families that elements involved in the heinous crime would be brought to justice.

Responding to the demands presented by tribal elders, the governor announced establishment of a 50-bed trauma centre at Parachinar and also ordered upgrade of the Agency headquarters hospital.

The governor said that concrete measures were underway to make improvement in the working of health and education sectors in Fata.

While referring to Fata reforms, the governor said: “The government wants to develop complete consensus on the Fata reforms and take the entire population living in the tribal belt into confidence before enacting them.”

He said the government was doing its best to achieve the consensus as soon as possible.

Tribal elders on the occasion reiterated their determination to “offer any sacrifice for ensuring security and stability of the country”.
