KARACHI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) senior vice-president of its Karachi chapter and a member of the provincial assembly, Khurrum Sher Zaman has demanded the deployment of Rangers’ personnel inside and outside polling stations for the PS-114 by-elections that will be held on July 9.

While speaking to the media, he said that in order to ensure a peaceful environment within the polling stations and to check electoral fraud and rigging, the deployment of Rangers at polling stations is a must.

He said that the Election Commission of Pakistan must enlist the Rangers’ help for the following responsibilities: the Rangers must be tasked with transporting election material to and from polling stations and they must be present at polling stations on the day of the by-election.

He also demanded that the Rangers be present at the time of counting and when the result forms are being completed, to ensure that the by-elections are held in a free, fair and transparent manner.

Zaman also demanded that the Sindh Rangers should arrest criminals and eliminate no go areas in the constituency. The MPA said that if there is a true democracy in the country then all his legal and just demands will be ensured by the Election Commission. The Election Commission must ensure a level playing field for all parties in order for elections to be accepted as credible, he told the media.

Zaman added that they have been complaining to the Election Commission about the Pakistan Peoples Party using government resources and using the police for their own gains in the constituency, however, no action has been taken yet. However, he added that whatever tactics the ruling party may use, their candidate will eventually lose and our candidate will be victorious.

According to the PTI leader, in a democracy, organising free and fair elections is more crucial than the result itself and therefore the Election Commission must play its due role in improving the election process in Pakistan.
