KARACHI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, taking a swipe at his political opponents, on Monday said “no one – not even the angels in heaven – can stop” Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and former president Asif Ali Zardari from doing corruption.

“Development of a nation depends upon the institutions working in an environment free of any political influence,” Imran said while addressing a news conference at the residence of PTI leader Arif Alvi in Karachi before flying off to the federal capital.

He said unfortunately the system of the country was being derailed by corruption of the rulers.

Sharif brothers will be in Adiala Jail soon, says Imran

“The Sharif family’s corruption is revealed in the Panama Papers. Yet his party members, ministers and beneficiaries have been trying to defend him,” he said. “The Sharifs, by appearing before the JIT, are giving an impression as if they have conquered Kashmir,” he added.

Lauding the cricket team, led by Sarfraz Ahmed, for winning the Champions Trophy, the PTI chairman said the captain deserved kudos for the way the team had displayed its skills.

He said Pakistan had also produced several champions in corruption. “We have champions in corruption who are very good at laundering money abroad through illegal means.”

Only honest leadership can take us forward: Imran

“The prime minister’s sons live an apartment worth billions of rupees, but they behave as if they are the most innocent people in the country,” he said and added: “People have become aware of their corruption in the country.”

Talking about Sindh, Imran said that on paper, the PPP government had shown Rs90 billion for Larkana, “but it has nothing to show on the ground” for which it should be held accountable.

“Mohen-jo-Daro is more developed than Larkana,” he said, sarcastically. He also deplored “the absence of healthcare and education systems in the province which is the basic right of every human being”.

Panamagate: Imran asks Nawaz to step down

Earlier, PML-Functional Jan Sher Junejo and MQM’s Pir Zaman Shah Jilani, who is a prominent political personality of Jamshoro district, met Imran along with their supporters and announced joining the PTI.
