MULTAN: A cleric in Multan mosque has allegedly beaten up a 10-year-old girl, who learned from him the Holy Quran, "for taking a holiday".

Laiba came home with bleeding mouth and broken teeth, her parents told The Express Tribune on Wednesday.

The child's father, Muhammad Shaheen said his daughter was beaten for showing up after a holiday, adding that Qari Akbar tortured students for minor mistakes.

Another parent, Najma Bibi, said her son Shami was hit by steel rods for not memorising a lesson. The 12-year-old had torture marks on his body when he returned home, she added.

A protest was also staged against Qari Akbar by Laiba's parents along with others in front of the New Multan police station. The residents of Qaisarabad demanded strict action against the cleric.

The demonstration was called off after the divisional chairman of National Aman Committee ensured resolution of the issue.

Haji Atiya | 7 years ago | Reply These so-called Qaris who take the law onto themselves in dealing with minors need to be caged with some chimps to 'break their teeth'.
