PESHAWAR: Phandu police have arrested Ismail Darwesh, district ameer of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat, for injuring three people with a rifle in what appears to be a road rage incident in Akhunabad area late Thursday night.

Police acted swiftly and arrested Darwesh after an FIR No 354 under Section 324 of PPC (attempt to murder) was lodged against him at the Phandu police station.

One of the injured, Ghulam Muhammad, a tailor, under treatment at Lady Reading Hospital, told the police that his bike was parked by a roadside when Darwash came over there in his car and complained about the road being blocked.

“He used foul language and soon afterwards started beating my nephew. When we intervened to stop him, he opened fire, injuring me [Ghulam Muhammad], Mukhtiar and Salman Shah, a resident of Akhunabad,” he said, adding that the accused fled the scene after firing.

On the other hand, Darwesh told The Express Tribune that one of his gunmen opened fire on three people in self defence when they tried to snatch his AK-47 rifle.

The police also backed up his story as an official told The Express Tribune that Darwesh had been provided with a police gunman who opened fire on three people and injured them.

However, the testimony of the injured was enough to book Darwesh.

“The recorded statement of the injured nominates Darwash as the attacker and not his gunman,” the cop said.
