Google's I/O conference gave us a peek at what Google has been up to over the past year. Over the course of the last few years, Google has slowly taken an edge over Apple in terms of the technological development of its apps.

With this year's conference, one thing has been confirmed that Google's Photos has certainly outdone its Apple counterpart.

We have listed a few reasons why you should make Google Photos your default photo storage and viewing app.

Storage

One of the simplest yet most important reason; storage. We all hate the message that pops up on our iPhone screen telling us to buy more storage for iCloud.

Google Photos doesn't have this problem because storage is free, with photos being saved at a maximum of 16 megapixels and videos in full HD.

Face Recognition

Facial recognition is another reason why Google trumps Apple. Google Photos is able to intelligently and accurately identify people, places, and things. It might not be perfect, but it’s certainly better than Apple’s image recognition software.

Google Lens

One primary reason why you should shift to Google Photos, if you haven't already, is Google Lens.

Showcased at the I/O conference, Google Lens understands what's happening in a photo and then provide you with useful actions you might be thinking of.

For example, Google Lens would identify the Eiffel Tower in a photo and would suggest what do with that image. It would display some facts of the Eiffel Tower along with operating hours, reviews and the option to contact them. It would also provide you directions to get there through Google Maps.

Shared Libraries

Shared libraries primarily lets you share or receive pictures from one other person

"You can give them access to your full photo library or if you prefer, only photos of certain people or from a certain date forward. And when they share their library with you, you can automatically save the photos you want so they also show up in search and in the movies, collages and other fun creations Google Photos makes for you," Google wrote in a blog post.

Although Apple's iCloud sharing has been a primary component of Apple, this update to Google makes sharing easier than ever before.

 Google Removing Objects

Google will soon let you remove entire objects from a photo. As seen from this demo, you can remove the objects with great accuracy. Previously users had to rely on Photoshop to make such alterations, but with this solution, photos can be altered much more easily.

Google Home will now talk to your GE Appliances

Google hasn't confirmed whether this feature will be a part of the Google Photos app, but it certainly does seem like the thing you'd want for your photos.

Here are some other reasons why Google Photos is leading the race.

  • It turns a batch of your burst photos into a GIF.

  • Collages are made automatically.

  • Fixes shaky videos on Android.
