MULTAN: Poor people should be provided relief in the upcoming budget. It is the duty of the government to facilitate the masses on all possible platforms.

This was said by former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani while addressing journalists during a ceremony which was organised for special children in Multan on Friday. He said relevant stakeholders should be consulted to discuss the positive and negative aspects of the budget so that no one should feel alienated. “Poor people should also be represented by the members of civil society so they could get maximum relief,” he added.

Funds allocated: Rs400m budget presented for Rahim Yar Khan

Gilani said, “Fifty years ago, my father laid the foundation of Nishtar Hospital, Multan. Our forefathers had founded the educational institutions and hospitals for the people of South Punjab.”  He maintained the people of South Punjab had always been sidelined in all areas including, health, education and employment opportunities.

The ex-prime minister said the teachings of sufism should be made part of the syllabus in schools to teach the values of tolerance, acceptance and brotherhood.

He pointed out the menace of terrorism and extremism could only be eradicated by teachings of sufism. He said, “Elimination of terrorism will boost the tourism industry, help in increasing country’s income and enhancing soft image of Pakistan.”
