MULTAN: In a unique sentence, a sessions court in Muzaffargarh ordered two drug peddlers on Tuesday to clean streets and sewers for a year as punishment for their crime.

Alipur additional sessions judge Muhammad Fawad Arif sentenced Qaisar Abbas and Fiyaz Hussain to sweep and mop streets and roads and clean gutters in Alipur tehsil for a year. The drug dealers have also been fined Rs500.

The court has ordered the tehsil municipal officer (TMO) to submit a report every 15 days on the implementation of the sentence.

Screening Process: Keeping tabs on drug trafficking

A case was registered against Abbas and Hussain two years ago at the City Police Station Alipur on the charges of selling drugs.

Civil society organisations and citizens have appreciated the sessions judge’s verdict saying that if more such exemplary punishments were handed down to drug dealers, the illegal business could be wiped out.

They further urged the TMO to keep a watchful eye on the two men and ensure that they were obeying court orders.
