CJP asks high courts to prevent delays in litigation

Seeks six-month performance report from courts, tribunals

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan [CJP] Mian Saqib Nisar has asked the chief justice of high courts to design concrete proposals to minimise delays in litigation.

Reviewing the performance of special courts and tribunal, Justice Nisar expressed displeasure over a huge backlog and slow pace of the disposal of cases. He said a six-month performance report should immediately be sought from tribunals and courts having a backlog.



He also ordered the Supreme Court [SC] and high courts to establish special cells for receiving complaints from overseas Pakistanis to redress their grievances.

Later in the day, the CJP held meetings with the National Judicial [Policy Making] Committee [NJPMC] and the Access to Justice Development Fund [AJDF] governing body. The NJPMC deliberated upon issues related to the grievances of overseas Pakistanis and the appointment of designated judges.

It was decided in the meeting that special cells would be created in the Supreme Court [SC] and all high courts to receive complaints from the overseas Pakistanis through email.

The chief justice ordered that the arrangement be widely publicised in print and electronic media for general information. He said the NJPMC would meet frequently to review the performance of the judiciary and other justice sector organisations to improve quality of the justice system.

The chief justices of the high courts assured their full cooperation and support for achieving the objectives for effective administration of justice.
