The order was passed on a lawsuit challenging the appointment of Professor Dr Khawar Saeed Jamali as the ‘acting’ vice-chancellor of the varsity and seeking the appointment of the vice-chancellor on a regular basis.
Six weeks on, no progress in vice-chancellors’ case
Earlier, the provincial government informed the court that the provincial chief minister had asked the governor to initiate the process of the vice-chancellor’s appointment afresh.
The secretary for universities and boards produced a letter in court written by Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah to Sindh Governor Mohammad Zubair.
New appointment: PU staff backs vice-chancellor’s decision
He said the chief minister has also requested that the additional charge of the vice-chancellor’s post given to Professor Jamali be withdrawn. The governor has further been requested to assign the acting charge to Professor Dr Muhammad Masroor, who is the senior most professor at the varsity and pro-vice chancellor during the interim period while the process of appointment of the vice-chancellor is undertaken.
Taking the statement of the secretary on record, the bench directed that the vice-chancellor be appointed by April 22. It also sought a compliance report in this regard by the next date of the hearing.
