Sustainable sustenance: ‘Pakistan has potential for food self-sufficiency’

SAARCO DG says member countries should promote trade with each other.

MULTAN: SAARC Arbitration Council (SAARCO) Director General Thusantha Wijemanna said Pakistan has a potential to attain food self-sufficiency.

He expressed these views during a visit to Taunsa Barrage Headworks where they witnessed Indus river dolphin along with his spouse on Thursday.

During his visit Thusantha was informed that Indus dolphins were one of the four species that live in freshwater and were named as the national mammal of Pakistan. He also visited an agriculture farm at head Muhammad Wala and lauded the irrigation system. Thusantha said Pakistan has a great potential to attain self-sufficiency in different sectors including food.

During a visit to a fabric factory, he appreciated the quality and standards of the products. He said SAARC countries should promote trade with each other for the prosperity of the region.

He was accompanied by Multan Chamber of Commerce and Industry Secretary General Khurram Javed and Multan Arts Council ex-director Muhammad Ali Wasti. He said SARCO was acting as a quality alternative dispute resolution forum on behalf of governments and the people of SAARC member states on its panel of arbitrators and conciliators.
