Though modern and majestic in its appearance, Fatemah Rawji’s home is warm, comfortable, and nurturing. As soon as we enter, we are warmly greeted by our hostess and taken straight into her favourite space — her kitchen!
The contemporary kitchen is well-equipped with the finest home appliances and adorned with classic yet striking décor pieces, primarily in tones of white and grey. For a brief minute, we stand in awe, admiring the spectacular view from the large, glass windows in front of us. Conversely, adornments like the quirky magnets collected by Fatemah and her children from all over the world add character and a sense of cosiness to this space, which otherwise feels too glorious to be real.
After she graciously offers us some delicious homemade pizza and mini-cupcakes, we begin to discuss the space. “This is my favourite spot because I spend most of my time in the kitchen, I barely go anywhere else. My children are big foodies, and in fact my whole family and all my friends love to sit in this kitchen. Anyone who walks into the house first comes here and then goes elsewhere — it’s the most used space,” she says.
Perceiving the significance Fatemah gives to her family and friends, we ask her to share some of her favourite memories created in the kitchen, and she sincerely answers: “My favourite memories are when my children’s friends come over. I’m always in here cooking up a storm for them! They are my biggest critics. They make me cook things till really late and they want it all freshly baked. I love doing that for them.” Speaking of her favourite items in the space, she states that while it’s hard to pick a favourite piece in this room, because everything she treasures is in here, perhaps the most cherished articles are her recipe books.
We glance around the space and can’t help but admire the pristine white walls, the contemporary silver finishing, and the simple but charming décor pieces, artfully placed around the room. Enthralled, we ask our host who the creative mind behind the interior design was, to which she answers: “The interior was a joined venture between my cousin, a friend and I. I just renovated the whole place, and if I had it my way, the whole house would have been a kitchen,” she chuckles, “but this kitchen was made spacious especially for my work and me, and it’s the best I’ve ever had so that means a lot.”
Speaking of her work, Fatemah explains that while her natural flair in the kitchen encouraged her to start the bakery, she began her business in order to give back to those in need. “Whatever I make from the bakery is completely donated. I started the business because I wanted to help those who don’t have big organisations or hospitals supporting them, and so many people have benefited from the money that I have earned. At the end of the month, I am truly at peace knowing that the money has been used for a good cause,” she says humbly.
We leave Fatemah’s residence taken by the contemporary aesthetic, vivacious nature, and humble persona of our charming host.
