One piece, three ways: Maheen Karim

We have three fashionistas showing us how to put together an item from a designers collection

While trends fade, style remains eternal and one piece can be put together in many different ways. In this feature we have three fashionistas showing us how to put together an item from a designers collection, according to their own individual style and taste!

Maheen Karim’s black cape is heavily embellished with black embroidery, primarily using beads. The chiffon material makes the silhouette easy to wear and versatile. The collared cape is definitely an evening essential, and can completely transform the look of any outfit!

I paired the cape with super-long, white flared pants and wore a white tank top underneath it. I figured all-white would be a nice contrast to the black cape. With the white tank top, it looked better when I wore it back-to-front, with the back having the slit. I wore my highest, platform, black patent leather Christian Louboutin heels and carried a Valentino ‘Rockstud’ flap bag with black sequence embroidery to keep my look formal. I completed the look with a pair of funky black and gold costume earrings. I gave myself a dark eye, something that I usually do for big, formal gatherings. I loosely curled my hair with tongs to give it a slightly wavy look. I’d definitely wear this outfit to a big dinner or somewhere formal.

I wore Maheen Karim’s sparkly, black sequinned cape over a black crop-top and black skinny jeans. I simply put the cape over my shoulders and left it unhooked. The outfit was accessorised with some gold jewellery, a printed McQueen clutch and a pair of super-high, peep-toe heels. A dark smoky eye and nude lips completed my look. This outfit is super-versatile and wearable for any formal occasion, as it can be dressed up or down to suit the setting.

I paired Maheen Karim’s cape with a long black dress from All Saints. The silhouette and length of the dress perfectly complements the cape — it almost looks like it came together! I turned the cape placing the opening at my shoulder so that it is asymmetrical, like the dress. I didn’t want the accessories to overpower the beautiful embellishment on the cape, so I went for my favourite diamante tops; they add just the right amount of sparkle. I chose a pair of gunmetal, snakeskin Christian Louboutin heels to pair with this outfit — it definitely needed a super high heel! For my make-up, I went for subtly glamorous, dark smoky eyes with a classic nude lip and soft waves in the hair. With the addition of the cape this outfit is perfect for a ball or a big party.
